In May 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved baxdrostat (Baxfendy) as an add-on therapy for patients who have uncontrolled hypertension despite treatment with other antihypertensive agents. This drug directly inhibits the synthesis of aldosterone, whereas the other available agents inhibiting the effect of aldosterone (e.g., spironolactone and eplerenone) block its receptor.
