The two-dose recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) regimen is recommended for all people aged ≥50 years and for those ≥19 years who are or will be immunocompromised. However, immunocompromised individuals and people who previously received the now-discontinued live attenuated zoster vaccine were excluded from the clinical trials that led to these recommendations.
To assess the real-world performance of RZV in people of all health backgrounds and vaccine histories, investigators analyzed data from Medicare beneficiaries using a study design that closely mirrored a randomized trial. The primary study outcome was the effectiveness of the vaccine against the occurrence of herpes zoster, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, and postherpetic neuralgia.
