Many patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) are poor candidates for surgical mitral-valve repair or replacement because of advanced age or comorbidities. Although transcatheter mitral edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) is approved for these patients, many are poor candidates for M-TEER because of unfavorable valve anatomy. Several transcatheter repair systems have been developed for these patients. In a new manufacturer-funded, single-arm study, researchers studied one such system — the SAPIEN M3, which is delivered via the femoral vein and involves transseptal deployment of a nitinol ring around the mitral subvalvular apparatus to serve as a “dock” for implantation of a balloon-expandable valve.
