Urgent surgical lavage is generally recommended for patients with native joint septic arthritis, but little is known about long-term outcomes with this approach compared with delayed intervention. Now, researchers have conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 268 adults who underwent surgical lavage for native joint septic arthritis within one health care system. Outcomes were assessed using a 9-point ranking that ranged from uncomplicated recovery to initial treatment failure, amputation, and death.
