Acute and chronic shoulder complaints are common reasons for primary care visits, but clinicians vary considerably in how they examine shoulders. In this study, 11 rheumatology fellowship program directors sought to establish a standard core of components to include in a general shoulder exam in patients with nonspecific shoulder pain.
They created videos of themselves teaching a 5-minute shoulder examination, circulated those videos among themselves, and eventually reached a consensus that the following maneuvers should be taught to all fellows and performed routinely:
Inspection with adequate exposure of both shoulders
