Oropouche fever is an arboviral infection transmitted by midges and mosquitoes that has been spreading in Latin America. Investigators, alerted to a cluster of cases, enrolled and followed for up to 3 months a cohort of 55 adults with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed Oropouche virus infection, providing clinical and laboratory assessments. The patients were mostly women aged 20 to 40, and many lived near banana plantations or engaged in recreational activities near fresh water.
The most common symptoms were fever, malaise, headache, myalgia, and retroorbital pain; rash, anorexia, and nausea also were common.
About one third of the participants had a recurrence of symptoms, at a median of 8 days after resolution.
