Clinical guidelines on osteoporosis generally recommend oral bisphosphonate treatment for 3 to 5 years, but little is known about the potential benefits of extending use beyond that window. To address this gap, researchers conducted a systematic review of studies that compared use for >5 years with shorter-term use. Studies were included only if all treatment arms had equivalent follow-up, meaning that patients receiving short-term therapy were followed for extended periods without active treatment. Of the 11 studies identified, 3 were randomized trials and 8 were observational studies. High heterogeneity in study methods and clinical variables precluded meta-analysis.
