Despite the theoretical concern about an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients taking calcium supplementation, prior studies show conflicting results, and data in high-risk patients are sparse. To provide further evidence, investigators retrospectively examined the association between calcium supplementation and CV event risk among 35,000 adults in Hong Kong (mean age, 77 years) with an average of two prior CV events (acute myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, or stroke). Half had been prescribed calcium supplementation with or without vitamin D, and the other half had not; the groups were matched on many comorbidities and clinical factors, including serum calcium level.
