A Novel Parkinson’s Treatment

Treatment of early Parkinson’s disease (PD) aims to improve motor symptoms and maintain function using medications such as levodopa, D2/D3 dopamine receptor agonists, or monoamine oxidase B inhibitors (depending on patient age and symptom severity). However, each class of medications carries a risk of side effects. Tavapadon is an investigational (not FDA-approved) oral, once-daily, selective D1/D5 partial agonist designed to improve motor symptoms while minimizing adverse effects associated with D2/D3 receptor overactivation. In this phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 27-week trial, 529 patients with early PD received fixed daily doses (5 mg or 15 mg) of tavapadon.
