Acute Covid-19 triggers the production of hundreds of autoantibodies (AABs) that target multiple tissues, including the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS). As a result, AAB-mediated diseases often appear for the first time after acute Covid-19. To evaluate whether persistent AABs might contribute to long Covid symptoms, investigators conducted studies in 82 patients with long Covid, 30 patients who recovered from acute Covid-19 without persisting symptoms, and 35 healthy controls.
Patients with long Covid and neurocognitive symptoms had higher levels of AABs against CNS and PNS proteins than the comparison groups.
