Infectious encephalitis can have devastating neurologic sequelae if it isn’t diagnosed and treated early. To better understand causes, clinical manifestations, and prognosis, researchers conducted a nationwide prospective cohort study in Denmark of all 495 adults diagnosed with infectious encephalitis between 2015 and 2023 (median age, 70). The average annual incidence was 1.2 cases per 100,000 people.
More patients had altered mental status and stroke as their referral diagnoses than suspected central nervous system infection.
