Incisionless magnetic resonance–guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a potential alternative to deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease. Unlike DBS, however, focused ultrasound creates a permanent lesion. In this prospective, industry-funded study, investigators examined whether the benefits of unilateral treatment, in 54 patients treated across nine international centers, would extend safely to staged bilateral pallidothalamic tractotomy using MRgFUS, performed in 40 of the patients.
Unilateral treatment produced significant, robust improvements in motor function and motor complications with a low rate of persistent clinically significant adverse events (2%).
