Nursing home residents are particularly vulnerable to respiratory viral infections and their complications. Early diagnosis can expedite treatment and infection control, and potentially reduce morbidity and mortality (). Investigators in Canada randomized 20 nursing homes to either on-site, point-of-care polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or to usual care (rapid antigen testing and send-out PCR).
