Tracking Candida auris in the U.S.

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) has emerged as a major health care–associated pathogen in the United States since it was first reported in 2016. This multidrug-resistant yeast can persist on surfaces, colonize people without causing symptoms, spread rapidly within health care facilities, and cause invasive infections with high mortality rates. From 2020 to 2021, clinical cases detected through diagnostic testing nearly doubled, and screening cases detected through colonization swabs tripled. Now, CDC researchers describe case counts from 2022 through 2024.
