For older adults and other patients ineligible for intensive chemotherapy, the standard induction course for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is 7 days of a hypomethylating agent such as azacitidine plus 28 days of venetoclax. However, retrospective studies have shown that shorter courses of venetoclax might preserve efficacy while reducing toxicity.
To test this approach, researchers conducted a phase 2, randomized noninferiority trial among 169 patients with newly diagnosed AML who were at least 60 years of age and ineligible for intensive chemotherapy.
