Women constitute the majority of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), yet our understanding of the long-term effects of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) on gynecologic health is poor. Because immunosuppressive therapies may increase susceptibility to persistent infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), investigators examined whether DMT exposure was associated with increased gynecologic complications.
In this retrospective analysis of electronic health records from 115,000 women with MS, researchers compared risks of adverse gynecologic outcomes between women receiving DMTs and similar women not receiving DMTs. Additional analyses compared risks associated with therapies according to their degree of immunosuppression.
