To assess the relation between clinical experience and quality of care, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 59 articles in which age or years since medical school graduation were compared with performance measured against quality standards. Four areas were addressed: knowledge; adherence to recommended standards for diagnosis, screening, or prevention; adherence to recommended standards for therapy; and health outcomes. Studies involved physicians from multiple specialties; outcomes were assessed based on observation or self-report. The researchers did not use standard meta-analysis techniques because the individual studies reported many different effect measures.
