Chest compressions alone have recently been shown to be effective in early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Journal Watch Emergency Medicine Mar 30 2007). Researchers performed an observational study to assess the age at which children can adequately perform chest compressions. After receiving basic life-support training in a single 20-minute session, 157 children at four U.K. schools performed chest compressions continuously for 3 minutes on a manikin with software that recorded compression rate and depth and correctness of hand position.
The participants were divided by age into three groups: 9 to 10 years, 11 to 12 years, and 13 to 14 years. Age was not related to compression rate or proportion of children achieving correct hand position. H…
