Manual in-line stabilization for suspected cervical spine (C-spine) injury can impair the glottic view during direct laryngoscopy. The Airtraq is a novel, single-use, indirect laryngoscope with an exaggerated curvature and a series of prisms and lenses that provide a view of the glottis through a proximal viewfinder. The device incorporates a guide channel through which an endotracheal tube can be inserted. In a randomized study, researchers compared ease of intubation with the Airtraq (provided by the manufacturer) and Macintosh laryngoscopes in 40 elective surgery patients who had no predictors of difficult intubation.
