The FDA announced that, after reviewing existing data, it will discuss the safety and effectiveness of cough and cold medication use in children next month. The safety of these products has been questioned, particularly for children younger than 2 years. FDA-approved dosing recommendations for administering cough and cold medications in this age group do not exist.
In 2006, the National Association of Medical Examiners, in collaboration with the CDC, examined reports of infant deaths during 2005 that were suspected to be linked to cough and cold medications.
