Although motor vehicle crashes commonly cause liver injuries, little is known about the effect of occupant and crash variables on risk for liver injury. Researchers assessed risk factors for liver injury using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network from 1995 to 2004.
Among 316 crash occupants with liver injuries (mean age, 36; mean Injury Severity Score, 37.6), 44% had moderate or severe injury. Five patients younger than 5 years were excluded from further analysis. Occupants with liver injury were compared with four control groups of occupants without liver injury.
