Population-based studies of shifts in the epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been needed. The Active Bacterial Core surveillance, Emerging Infections Program Network conducted a population-based surveillance for invasive MRSA at nine U.S. sites from July 2004 through December 2005. Cases were categorized as healthcare-associated (onset in hospital or community) or community-associated (without known risk factors for MRSA).
Among 8987 cases of invasive MRSA disease (defined by isolation of MRSA from normally sterile fluids, such as blood or cerebrospinal fluid), 58.4% were community-onset, 26.6% were hospital-onset, 13.7% were community-associated, and 1.3% could not be categorized. In 2005, the incidence …
