A rapid response team is a multidisciplinary group, mostly intensive care providers, that evaluates and treats patients who arrest or deteriorate significantly outside the intensive care unit (ICU). Implementation of adult rapid response teams has reduced rates of cardiopulmonary arrest and mortality by as much as 67% and 35%, respectively. To determine the effect of a pediatric rapid response team, researchers compared rates of mortality and respiratory or cardiopulmonary arrest during the 56 months before (22,037 admissions and 102,537 patient-days) and 19 months after (7257 admissions and 34,420 patient-days) introduction of a team at a single academic children’s hospital.
