Fluoroquinolones are generally avoided in patients younger than 18 years because of concerns about arthropathy. In a comprehensive review of literature published from 1980 to 2007, researchers identified four retrospective clinical trials that studied the incidence of arthropathy or tendinopathy in pediatric patients treated with fluoroquinolones.
The first study, a meta-analysis of 31 trials that included a total of 7045 patients, identified 10 cases of transient arthralgia, but none was directly attributable to fluoroquinolone use.
