Adenovirus, the usual cause of the common cold, currently is classified into 52 serotypes. These authors report three cases of severe pneumonia caused by adenovirus serotype 14 (Ad14), a serotype that previously was rarely reported to cause illness. The patients (aged 17 months, 3 years, and 49 years) were admitted to two U.S. hospitals in April and May of 2006.
All patients had underlying chronic pulmonary disease. The 17-month-old patient was born prematurely at 33 weeks’ gestation and presented with a 2-day history of high fever, cough, and decreased oral intake.
