Flexible fiber-optic scopes are valuable in cases of anticipated or known difficult intubation. Manipulation of a fiber-optic scope, however, requires different skills than those used for routine laryngoscopy. These authors evaluated whether acquisition of fiber-optic intubation skills through training on a simulator translates to clinical success.
Twenty-eight respiratory therapists who were novice fiber-optic scope users underwent brief training that consisted of written and oral instructions on use of a fiber-optic scope, followed by 1 hour of practice on a simulator.
