Intubation through the intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA) is successful in more than 95% of patients undergoing routine general anesthesia, but success on the first attempt is only approximately 80%. The CTrach is a modified ILMA that has fiber-optic bundles and a detachable viewing screen to permit visualization of the glottis. Researchers in Singapore block-randomized 271 fasted, nonobese adult patients scheduled for elective general anesthesia to undergo intubation using either the ILMA or the CTrach. Before intubation was performed by an anesthesiologist who was experienced with both devices, another anesthesiologist performed direct laryngoscopy and recorded the Cormack-Lehane grade.
