Use of antiemetics in children has been viewed unfavorably, and the FDA has warned against use of promethazine in children younger than 2 years because of possible fatal respiratory depression. Newer 5-hydroxytryptamine antiemetic agents, such as ondansetron, have good safety records with few reported adverse events but are not currently incorporated in gastroenteritis treatment guidelines. These authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 controlled trials that evaluated seven antiemetic agents in a variety of settings in children with vomiting from gastroenteritis.
