The National Registry of Myocardial Infarction (NRMI) was a voluntary, prospective, observational, industry-sponsored study that enrolled more than 2.5 million patients with acute MI at 2157 U.S. hospitals from 1990 to 2006. From the registry’s inception, its data have been used to drive performance improvement and to understand patterns of clinical performance. Three recent reports from NRMI investigators describe temporal trends in patient care during 1990 to 2006. Some highlights:
The prevalence of non–ST-segment elevation MI (NSTEMI) increased relative to STEMI (from 14% to 59%).
Risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates decreased for both STEMI and NSTEMI (by 24% and 23%, respectively).
