Whether B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is an indicator of myocardial dysfunction in patients with septic shock is not certain. In a prospective observational study, researchers evaluated the association between BNP, left ventricular dysfunction, and 30-day mortality in 93 patients who were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) without signs or symptoms of sepsis or left ventricular dysfunction but who developed sepsis during their ICU stay. BNP was measured and echocardiography was performed on the day of sepsis onset (baseline), 4 to 5 days later, and 12 days later.
