Prior research has suggested that outcomes for critically ill children are better when children are transported by a specialized pediatric team than by a nonspecialized team. In a prospective, nonrandomized, observational study, these authors compared outcomes in a convenience sample of 1085 children (mean age, 46 months) who were transported by a specialized team (94% of children) or nonspecialized teams (6% of children) to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh during 2002. The specialized team was the preferred mode; patients were transported by other teams only when the specialized team was not available. In all cases, transport was requested by a referring physician from the receiving institution.
