Video laryngoscopes have been promoted as having advantages over conventional laryngoscopes, particularly for unanticipated difficult intubations. In a randomized study, researchers compared time to intubation and glottic view between the McGrath video laryngoscope (which has a video screen permanently attached to the handle) and the Macintosh direct laryngoscope during routine intubations of 120 adult patients by four first-year anesthesiology trainees who received training in the use of both techniques (including 10 McGrath intubations). Anesthetic agents, patient position, and use of a stylet for direct laryngoscopy were left to the discretion of the intubators.
