An alternative to direct laryngoscopy, the GlideScope is a video laryngoscope with a sharply angulated blade that has an integrated video camera that displays the view of the upper airway on an external video screen. In a prospective observational study of 280 adult patients undergoing emergency intubation, researchers compared first-attempt intubation success rates for residents using the GlideScope or direct laryngoscopy.
Residents and attending physicians attended a 30-minute orientation to the GlideScope and practiced at least once on an airway manikin.
