Epidemiologic studies from the early 1990s estimated that the incidence of pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) was 5.3 per 10,000 hospital admissions. In a retrospective cohort study, investigators used the Pediatric Health Information System database from 41 tertiary care U.S. children's hospitals to assess changes in incidence from 2001 through 2007.
During the study period, there were 13,449 hospital admissions among 11,337 patients with VTE. The annual rate of VTE increased significantly from 34 to 58 cases per 10,000 hospital admissions.
