Spine immobilization can limit the view of the glottis and make intubation with direct laryngoscopy difficult. Video laryngoscopy has been shown to improve intubation success compared with direct laryngoscopy (JW Emerg Med Mar 14 2008), even in patients with cervical spine immobilization. In a single-center study conducted in Switzerland, investigators used an extreme method of C-spine immobilization to evaluate intubation success with the GlideScope. Fifty patients who were undergoing elective surgery that required intubation had their necks immobilized with semirigid cervical collars (the anterior portion of the collars was closed) and their heads taped to gurneys.
