Therapeutic hypothermia has been shown to improve neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest in adults and asphyxia at birth. To ascertain the feasibility of postarrest hypothermia treatment in children, investigators retrospectively reviewed charts for 181 patients (mean age, 6 years; age range, 1 week to 21 years) who were admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit from 2000 to 2006 after in-hospital (55%) or out-of-hospital (45%) cardiac arrest. All patients had return of spontaneous circulation after receiving chest compressions for pulselessness. Treating physicians decided whether to use hypothermia treatment and determined the target temperature; 40 patients received hypothermia treatment, and 141 received standard treatment.
