Researchers prospectively evaluated test characteristics for two admission bedside ultrasound measures and one clinical measure of pediatric dehydration in a convenience sample of children (age, <15 years) who were admitted to three rural Rwandan hospitals with diarrhea, vomiting, or both from March to July 2009. The ratio of the aorta to inferior vena cava (IVC) diameters, the percent collapse of the IVC with inspiration, and the WHO dehydration scale were evaluated relative to the criterion standard for severe dehydration: >10% weight change from presentation to discharge.
