In a prospective, randomized, controlled trial of 103 children (mean age, 9 years) who presented to an academic tertiary care hospital with distal forearm fractures, investigators compared outcomes after fluoroscopy-guided reduction performed by pediatric emergency physicians (EPs) versus orthopedic residents (postgraduate year 3 or 4). Patients with open fractures, polytrauma, neurovascular compromise, or a previous reduction attempt were excluded. Before the study, the two participating pediatric EPs received focused instruction in fracture manipulation from a pediatric orthopedist, and each EP performed five reductions.
