Using data from a U.S. national adverse drug event (ADE) surveillance project and two national surveys of ambulatory medical care, researchers compared hemorrhage-related ADEs in patients taking clopidogrel and aspirin (dual antiplatelet therapy; DAT) with those in patients taking warfarin.
Minor hemorrhage involving epistaxis or skin accounted for most visits overall; visit rates for these events were similar for patients taking DAT and warfarin (59% and 54%). Gastrointestinal hemorrhage was the most common serious ADE in both groups (31% and 23%, respectively; not a significant difference), and the risk for hospital admission among this subset of patients was similar for both groups.
