To determine the association between recreational sports and heat illness, CDC researchers analyzed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System – All Injury Program for patients who presented to emergency departments (EDs) with sports-associated nonfatal heat illness in 2001 to 2009. Symptoms of heat illness are headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and altered mental status.
The estimated annual number of patients treated in U.S. EDs for sports-associated nonfatal heat illness was 6000, and the estimated annual rate of ED visits for illness was 2 per 100,000 population.
