To evaluate the effectiveness of the VeinViewer (a near-infrared light device that delineates subcutaneous veins) for peripheral intravenous (IV) access, investigators randomized a convenience sample of 322 children (age range, 0–17 years) at a tertiary care pediatric emergency department to peripheral IV catheter placement by the standard technique or assisted by the VeinViewer.
Overall, no differences were noted between the VeinViewer and standard-technique groups in time to placement of the catheter (132 and 145 seconds), number of attempts (success rate on first attempt, 79% and 78%), or pain scores reported by patients, guardians, or nurses.
