In a prospective observational study, investigators assessed the association between burn size and morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients with burn size ≥30% total body surface area who were admitted to a Texas burn center between 1998 and 2008.
Of 952 patients (mean age, 7.3 years), 13% died, 16% developed multiorgan failure, and 9% developed sepsis. These endpoints correlated significantly with burn size; for example, in patients with burn size 30%–39% total body surface area compared to those with burn size 90%–100%, mortality rates were 3% versus 55%, incidence of multiorgan failure was 6% versus 45%, and incidence of sepsis was 2% versus 26%.
