Stroke pathophysiology is different in younger patients than in older patients. To compare outcomes after thrombolysis between younger and older patients, investigators analyzed data from the Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Stroke–International Stroke Thrombolysis Register (SITS-ISTR) for 3246 patients aged 18 to 50 and 24,425 patients aged 51 to 80 who received alteplase within 4.5 hours of stroke onset (JW Emerg Med Feb 23 2007).
The younger group had significantly lower incidence of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (adjusted odds ratio, 0.53) and 3-month mortality (AOR, 0.49), and significantly higher incidence of functional independence at 3 months (AOR, 1.61).
