To compare operating characteristics of the pediatric i-gel and LMA Classic, researchers randomly assigned 99 healthy children (age range, 1 month to 9 years; weight, 6–30 kg) undergoing elective surgery to ventilation with one of the two supraglottic devices. Patients with previous or anticipated airway problems were excluded. Devices were inserted by a single operator who had performed more than 20 i-gel and 200 LMA Classic insertions.
Baseline characteristics were similar between groups, except more boys were assigned to the LMA Classic. Median insertion time was shorter with the i-gel (17 vs. 21 seconds).
