To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral dimenhydrinate in the treatment of pediatric gastroenteritis, investigators conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at a pediatric emergency department in Quebec. From 2005 to 2010, 144 previously healthy children aged 1 to 12 years (mean, 4 years) who presented with gastroenteritis associated with at least five episodes of vomiting in the previous 12 hours received either placebo or dimenhydrinate (1 mg/kg; maximum dose, 50 mg) every 6 hours for 24 hours. Patients with suspected surgical or medical etiology for vomiting were excluded.
