As part of a pilot study, researchers in Japan evaluated a novel three-step ultrasound technique for central vein catheterization. The steps were (1) identifying a straight section of the vein in the short axis; (2) using a needle guide; and (3) identifying the true vein center in the long axis by rotating the distal and then proximal portion of the ultrasound probe. Venipuncture was visualized on ultrasound. Nine operators with varying levels of experience performed 61 axillary and 39 internal jugular vein catheterizations. Each operator received manikin training and demonstrated proficiency with the technique before the study.
