The presence of intraluminal appendiceal air on abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan is occasionally interpreted as ruling out the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. In this retrospective single-institution study, researchers compared presence of intraluminal air on abdominal CT scans from 100 consecutive patients who underwent CT before positive appendectomy and 100 consecutive patients who had did not have appendicitis (negative CT scans and no subsequent diagnosis of appendicitis).
