Using trauma registry data, researchers retrospectively determined the association between creatine kinase values and acute kidney injury in patients <18 years of age who were admitted to one of two California trauma center intensive care units from 2004 to 2011. Acute kidney injury was defined as ≥50% reduction of creatine clearance.
Of 521 patients with creatine kinase values recorded (median age, 14 years), 70 (13%) developed acute kidney injury. Incidence of kidney injury increased with increasing creatine kinase values — from 8% in those with levels <1500 IU/L to 71% in those with levels ≥6000 IU/L.
