The cough suppressant Tessalon (benzonatate) could be harmful if taken by children younger than 10 years of age, the FDA cautioned on Tuesday. The drug may be attractive to children because the gel capsules look like candy.
Five children aged 2 years and under have died since 1982 after accidentally ingesting benzonatate, according to the FDA. Overdose can occur after swallowing only one or two of the capsules. Symptoms of excessive intake can present within 15 to 20 minutes after ingestion, and can include convulsions, cardiac arrest, and coma.
The FDA is adding a warning to the drug's label about the risks it poses to children under age 10. Additionally, the agency recommends that the medication be kept in childproof containers.
