SAR236553, a monoclonal antibody against an enzyme that blocks clearance of low-density lipoproteins, enhances the effect of atorvastatin, according to a New England Journal of Medicine study.
In the phase II study, conducted by the manufacturer, some 90 patients with hypercholesterolemia were randomized either to high- or lower-dose atorvastatin plus subcutaneous SAR236553, or to high-dose atorvastatin plus placebo. After 8 weeks' treatment and 8 weeks' follow-up, the mean percent decline from baseline LDL values was roughly 73% and 66%, respectively, for high- and lower-dose atorvastatin plus SAR236553, versus 17% for high-dose atorvastatin plus placebo.
The researchers conclude that "the results of this small study of short duration warrant further investigation in large, longer-term studies."
